Schools Are Making the Grade, Too.

Congratulations to all the Healthy Elementary and Middle Schools!  Please review these summaries for the best practice recommendations for nutrition and phsyical activity.  Thank you for your commitment to improving the health and wellness of your school community.  We look forward to your participation next school year.

And thank you to HBO for partnering with Healthy Howard to screen The Weight of the Nation at the 5th Annual Healthy Schools Awards Ceremony.

Schools are an integral part of our children’s development as well as an invaluable asset to parents and the community. Healthy Schools was developed to recognize schools that have displayed extraordinary commitment in the areas of nutrition and physical activity.  Read the one-page overview of the Healthy Schools Program here.

Program Goal

The goal of the Healthy Schools program is to create an environment of health and wellness that will engage the entire school community.  This can be done through -

  • Assessing the overall health of a school through the categories of nutrition and physical activity education
  • Establishing strong partnerships with parents, students, school staff and community members
  • Ensuring that all schools are represented through an annual awards ceremony that will recognize a school's achievement in health and wellness

What does it take to become a Healthy School?

  • Have a commitment to create a culture where healthy eating and physical activity are the norm and not the exception
  • Complete all requested documentation and provide updates on your program’s progress.
  • Promote parent, community and professional involvement in developing a healthier school environment
  • Celebrate your successes!
